Stoke Some years back (I’m going to guess about 7 ?) Helite came to a CWAM (Coventry and Warkwickshire Advanced Motorcyclists) social evening and gave a presentation on their airvests. Shortly after, a friend of ours (Lee Vigor) was involved in an accident where the airvest saved his life. That was the final push for us, and we went out and bought a vest each … myself one of the original designs, and Tess one of the newly-out Turtle 1’s Over the many miles since, they’ve served us well and always been worn, albeit starting to look a little tired from the many, many hours and weathers they’ve had to endure. Two weeks ago on 4th April, the worst thing happened. On a roundabout in South Wales a car driver decided he wanted to exit the roundabout. Through Tess, and her Tiger 800. He hit her side on, crushing her leg between car and bike, and jettisoning her from the bike. All she saw was sky, floor, sky, floor, before coming to a sudden stop and landing lengthwise onto the kerb at the side of the road. It’s here – half on and half off the kerb – where she came to a stop. Cue 4 Police cars, a Police motorbike, Paramedic car, Ambulance, and 2 hours at the side of the road trying to stabilise her before transport to A&E. Two weeks on, she’s still in hospital (and likely to be there some time) following 4 operations trying to save the leg – things are looking a bit more positive in that way, but the heavy damage to her leg is going to take some time to heal, and may never be the same … she has a long journey ahead of her. However. At point of departure from the bike, the Turtle did its thing and deployed. As you can see from the photo below, there’s some scuffing where she’s bounced along the ground, but the main thing to note is the long scuff mark pretty much parallel with (and crossing) her spine. We firmly, utterly believe that the Helite Turtle airvest saved her, if not from severe spinal damage, then from something much, much worse. As it was, all she’s got on her upper torso (apart from bruising) is 1 cracked vertebrae and 1 cracked rib. Absolutely nothing compared to what could have happened. So yeah … I guess I’m writing to say, on behalf of myself and Tess … thank you. Not the nicest way to test your product for you, but it bl**dy worked !! Thank you. Because of your product, my wife is still with me. When, or if, Tess is capable (physically or mentally) of being able to ride again, you can guarantee the first item purchased will be a Helite airvest. Plus, it’s probably time for me to upgrade to a newer model too ! Nev Pugh Lee Viugor Scotland It was good to catch you at the bike show today. As promised I have attached some photos & video from my bike crash which took place near Pitlochry, at the end of June 2019. As you can see the accident was a back wheel skid which developed into a high side at roughly 50mph. I did a number of flips and went through a fence and hit a tree. The Air Ambulance service was called and had to correct my leg on scene.  I broke the knuckle clean off my femur and had surgery to put in a permanent plate and 9 screws. Now what I am seriously impressed by, is that I landed on my back, hitting my head (destroying a carbon fibre helmet) and I didn’t have a single upper body bruise. No neck strain, just nothing. To be honest I remember the accident very clearly and felt no upper body pain when hitting the ground. Sadly I felt the legs.  Having had dirt bike accidents, with full Alpinestars armour the difference is significant.  I have owned the air vest for roughly 5 years, and have toured all of Spain and Portugal. Worn it everyday as a commuter in the fine Scottish weather and still it performed perfectly.  A couple of my friends who were on scene have since invested in your adventure/touring jackets. Nothing like seeing it to believe it eh. Hopefully some of this is useable for you guys and you can clean up the video to be a bit clearer. You have made a great product and I hear you are going to be doing cordless vests/ jackets which I can’t wait to see. J M Ian Wheatley WEST MIDLANDS On a sunny Thursday afternoon travelling home from work on the busy M6 motorway I was involved in a motorcycle accident which involved four vehicles. I cannot remember the incident but believe I was hit from behind by a van in lane 3 at approximately 50 mph. I then hit the windscreen and somehow ended up landing in between the crash barriers on the motorway. My Helite airbag worked brilliantly and saved me from sustaining any serious injuries. The doctors and medical staff could not believe how I was not more seriously injured & one doctor said I was the luckiest motorcyclist he had ever seen. I did suffer a broken collarbone, arm and fingers but I was released from hospital on the same day and I put this down to how well my Helite airbag worked. I would recommend Helite airbag products to anyone who rides and firmly believe it saved my life that day. Remember you can’t put a price on your life. IAN WEST MIDLANDS View more customer testimonials and videos View Testimonials Frequently asked questions How do I choose the right size? It is important to choose the right size of your airbag for optimal protection. For this, we advise you follow our size chart. Hint: measuring your back is important and a good indication to finding the right size. Please note that this Airbag Safety Vest should always be worn over your normal riding gear. You should therefore only take your measurements whilst wearing your equipment. Where can I buy new canisters? All replacement canisters can be purchased from our canisters section found in the main menu. Where can I buy replacement parts? Perhaps you have lost your fork sensor pairing device or charging cable. It happens from time to time. These can be purchased from our Motorcycle Components section found in the main menu. Can I reuse my airbag system after an accident? Yes, as long as the airbag is in good condition with no holes or tears. It’s easy to do, you can reset the system in under 2 minutes, without sending your airbag system back to us. You simply need to replace the CO2 canister with a new one, available in our canisters section. Please read the manual and see the videos section on this page, showing how this is done. How long does it take to charge? A typical charge takes around 3 hours but can vary due to battery level, temperature and age. During charge, the vest is not operational. The lights on the vest will determine if the battery is healthy, low (needs charging), or has an issue (needs replacing). How long does each charge last? Each charge will last approximately 25 hours. It is worth checking the battery level before each use. How many fork sensors can I pair with my vest? If you own several bikes, you can pair each vest with up to 5 fork sensors. Fork sensors can also be bought separately form our Motorcycle Components section situated in the main menu. Can the fork sensor be used with multiple vests? Yes. If you are carrying a pillion passenger, or many people use the same bike, then you can pair as many vests to the fork sensor as you like. It is worth noting that any airbag systems that are in the vicinity of the fork sensor whilst being paired to the sensor and switched on will be triggered in the event of an accident. Please read the manual carefully. Do I need to recharge the fork sensor? No. The fork sensor lasts for approximately 5 years. At this point a replacement will need to be purchased. Always check that you are pair to the sensor before use. Do I need a fork sensor? Yes and No. The motorcycle safety vest will work on its own if you are involved in an accident but only after reaching a speed of 22mph. The fork sensor will give collision detection, even when stationary. Can I reuse the CO2 canister? No, once it is used you will need a replacement. All replacement canisters can be purchased from our canisters section found in the main menu. What is the warranty of the Helite airbag systems? All our airbag safety vest systems come with a 2 year warranty. You can extend this if you register the product within 3 months of purchase and have it serviced by us at the end of the first two years. This will give you an additional two years of warranty. Can I travel with my Helite airbag? Bus, train, car: No constraint. For electronic models, remember to turn off the vest when you take this type of transport with your vest. Plane : You may encounter some difficulties with the security services regarding the CO2 canisters used to inflate the airbag. According to the regulations (IATA Regulations – see download), you are authorised to fly with 2 gas canisters (the volume must be less than 200cc), in the cabin or in the hold. Even if the regulations allow it, it is possible that the security service or the airline refuses to let you board with it. We strongly recommend that you print the “IATA Regulations” and show this document to the security service or the airline during the control if they ask for more explanations. In any case, it is the airport security service and the airline that will make the final decision whether or not to accept the airbag on board. Often each airline will have their own advice pages online, it is worth printing these out also as supplementary documentation.
